We are Calderdale's local mental health charity, led by people who have personal experience of mental distress.

Healthy Minds aims to develop innovative, responsive and flexible resources that will enhance wellbeing in Calderdale.  Our ethos and services derive from our collective experience of living and working with mental distress.  We take a whole-person approach, recognising the impact of social, economic and health inequalities on mental health.

In its mildest form, depression can mean just being in low spirits. It doesn’t stop you leading your normal life, but makes everything harder to do and seem less worthwhile. At its most severe, major depression (clinical depression) can be life-threatening, because it can make people suicidal or simply give up the will to live.
A mental disorder or mental illness is a psychological or behavioral pattern that occurs in an individual and is thought to cause distress or disability that is not expected as part of normal development or culture.

Empowerment refers to increasing the spiritual, political, social or economic strength of individuals and communities. It often involves the empowered developing confidence in their own capacities.
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.
